I am aware that there have been various research projects undertaken into the ISM Code and related issues. However, there does not appear to be a central reference source to identify what research has been undertaken, the results of that research or what research is presently being undertaken - although the IMO Library does hold details of some of the projects.
The purpose of this page is to provide such a central reference source and thus provide an opportunity to access completed research projects, raise awareness of what other research projects have been undertaken, what projects are currently being undertaken and what projects might be planned for the future. With the permission of the Researchers and their Research Institution I will also publish their contact details such that researchers, or others, who may also be involved in a particular area or otherwise have information to share may contact each other. I will also provide details of Institutions who provide facilities which would allow research programmes to be developed in ISM related subjects.
I would also encourage researchers to visit other pages of this website where they may find specific research projects - for example in the 'Papers and Articles', 'Human Factors' sections etc.
I would encourage and welcome individual Researchers and Research Institutions to send me details of their current activities, projects, facilities etc. which I may post on this page and which will be accessed by many thousands of individuals directly interested and involved in ISM and marine safety management every week.
Send details to me at philanderson@consultism.co.uk
Research into ISM Implementation
There has been little research, to my knowledge, of how ISM implementation is actually progressing and whether it is achieving any measurable results - other than my own project which I conducted as part of my Doctoral work between Phase 1 and Phase 2 ISM implementation dates and a project undertaken by the IMO in 2005. Details of these two projects can be accessed here but I would be most grateful to receive details of any other research which may have been carried out, or is being carried out, which can be shared with others users of this website.

10 years of the ISM code; Research into how effective it has been in improving safety in the maritime industry. William Wesson, University of Plymouth
|
|
| |
|
William Wesson from the University of Plymouth is conducting research entitled "10 years of ISM" which will investigate how the ISM code has evolved since its implementation and in comparison to the previous IMO reports on this area.
To identify how views on the code have changed in relation to effectiveness, necessity, DPA's and future development. The research use various methods including the analysis of quantitative data gathered using two different questionnaires (shore / sea) to identify the difference in views.
This data will then be enriched with a series of qualitative semi structured interviews with a variety of Specialists and code users.
William would be very grateful for anyone completing a questionnaire, these are available online on the "10 years of ISM" website: www.freewebs.com/10yearsofism

Study on the Impact of the ISM Code and its Effectiveness in the Enhancement of Safety of Life at Sea and Protection of the Marine Environment
|
|
| |
|
At the 81st session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee a report was presented under the title: 'Study on the Impact of the ISM Code and its Effectiveness in the Enhancement of Safety of Life at Sea and Protection of the Marine Environment'. This was an extremely important report for the entire shipping industry throwing down a range of crucially important challenges to the industry. I believe it is of vital importance that the industry rises and responds to those challenges. We must not allow this report to be filed away in the IMO archives.
The report was the result of a research project which was undertaken between November 2004 and 2005. The Secretary General of IMO, Admiral Efthimios Mitropoulos deserves due credit for his splendid initiative in pulling together a very high calibre group of industry experts who worked with a team from the IMO Secretariat and researchers from the World Maritime University. I had the honour and privilege to be included in that team.
The full report, as it appeared in MSC 81/17/1 an be accessed using the following link:
Published Report
I would also direct the interested reader to my article 'What are we waiting for?' which can be accessed on the 'Papers and Articles' section of this website.

Research into ISM Related Issues
In this section I identify a number of related research projects which are both complete and still being developed. I would very much appreciate receiving details of similar projects which can be shared with users of this site.

ISM Code in practice
|
|
| |
|
Capt Syamantak Bhattacharya is currently undertaking full time research towards a PhD at the Seafarers International Research Centre at Cardiff University . The thrust of his research involves a practical look at the ISM Code in practice.
Two articles have appeared in the newsletter of Consultism - 'ReportISM' - in issues 4 and 5 respectively - looking at the research Captain Bhattacharya. These articles can be accessed in those issues of ReportISM - which can be found on the ReprtISM section of this website or through the following links:

Difficulties of Fieldwork
I hope Captain Bhattacharya will share further developments of his research with us in the near future.

Professional Studies Research Degrees
|
|
| |
We offer two professional studies qualifications. These degrees have a generic framework enabling a wide range of professionals from the public, private, and voluntary sectors to negotiate programmes which are customised to the needs of their own professions or organisations.
- MProf Open to professionals and managers, this applied alternative to an MPhil can be taken as a qualification in its own right or as a stepping stone leading to a DProf.
- DProf Aimed at high-level professionals for whom a PhD might be too abstract, the content of this degree is a research and development programme. It offers an opportunity to focus on personal excellence and/or instigate major change within an organisation. (All candidates aiming for the DProf enter at MProf level and then upgrade to DProf status after completion of certain modules or through claim for the accreditation of existing learning)
All the degrees listed above require the presentation of a thesis, research project, or research portfolio, and discussion with external examiners at an oral examination. The MPhil/PhD by Public Works and the M/DProf by Public Works require the presentation of an evaluative context statement, and discussion with external examiners at an oral examination.
